Project-Based Travel Represents a Large and Growing Segment of the US Business Travel Market

The results of a landmark study of the project-based business travel segment were released today. The study, conducted by Rockport in partnership with GBTA and Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) found that a total of 66 million project-based trips were taken in the US last year. Total spending on these trips eclipsed $45 billion in 2017, roughly 15% of all business travel spending over the period. The study found significant differences in the way project-based trips are booked and the incidence of project-based business travel by industry. Learn more.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul Region Reaps Handsome Reward From Super Bowl LII

The net economic impact to the Minneapolis-St. Paul economy from Super Bowl LII was an estimated $400 million, according to the recent Rockport study of the big game. Rockport estimates are derived from a comprehensive analysis of visitor expenditures, host committee and NFL operations, reported tax collections, media expenditures and other ancillary economic activities. The net economic impact included 5,490 jobs supported, $273 million in paid wages and $32.4 million in state and local tax revenues. Learn more.
Glensheen Historic Mansion Drives $7.5 Million in Economic Impact for the Duluth Economy

A recent Rockport study of Glensheen found that roughly 90,000 people visited the attraction from outside the local area in 2016. Glensheen, the Historic Congdon Estate is a 20,000 square foot mansion in Duluth, Minnesota, United States, operated by the University of Minnesota Duluth as a historic house museum. Spending by visitors coupled with the operations and capital expenditures of Glensheen led to a $7.5 million injection into the local economy. Glensheen was also responsible for supporting 143 local jobs and generating $2.5 million in federal, state and local tax revenue. Learn more.
Minneapolis Gears Up to Host Super Bowl LII

Minneapolis gears up to host Super Bowl LII on February 4th 2018, an event that is expected to generate an estimated $343 million in economic impact in the Minneapolis-St. Paul MSA, according to pre-event impact study conducted by Rockport Analytics. These preliminary figures will be revised later this year and released by the Minnesota Host Committee once Rockport Analytics has conducted a full assessment of the impacts. Learn more.
Annual Business Travel Spend Rises to $1.3 Trillion in 2016

A new study conducted by Rockport Analytics and the Global Business Travel Association estimates global business travel spend hit $1.3 trillion in 2016. We expect spending growth to accelerate in to 2018. In fact, next year is projected to be the strongest year for business travel spending gains since 2014. The renewed optimism for business travel activity is being driven by an uptick in global trade, expected improvements in the manufacturing sector, economic improvements in emerging markets and shifting currency dynamics. Travel Price Inflation to Tick Higher in 2018

According to research conducted by Rockport Analytics in the fourth annual 2018 Global Travel Price Forecast travel prices are expected to rise sharply in the coming year, reaching nearly 4% increases in some sectors. Released today by Carlson Wagonlit Travel, the global travel management company, and the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of the Global Business Travel Association, The 2018 Global Travel Forecast shows global airfares are expected to rise 3.5% in 2018; hotel prices are expected to be 3.7% higher; and ground transportation such as taxis, trains and buses are expected to rise only 0.6% – significantly less than the 3% inflation forecast for 2018. Super Bowl LI Nets $347 million for the Greater Houston Economy

The 2017 Super Bowl brought in $347 million to greater Houston’s economy, according to a new report released May 25 commissioned by the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee. The 2017 Super Bowl study, conducted by Rockport Analytics, estimates that more than $428 million in gross spending occurred in the roughly two weeks around the Super Bowl. That includes spending by the 150,000 estimated visitors in town for the big game, as well as event, game and broadcast operations and spending. Learn more.
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Site System Produces an Outsized Economic Benefit for the State

A recent Rockport Analytics study found that an estimated 274,500 visitors came to Indiana for the purpose of visiting either the State Museum or one of the 11 historic sites around the state. Not including any ISMHS admission fees, these visitors spent nearly $86 million in the state, or an average of $312 per visitor. The economic stimulus generated by the museum system added $84.5 in Gross State Product, supported 1,790 jobs and brought in $16 million in state and local tax revenue.
Delaware Tourism Hits Record High in 2015

More than 8.5 million people crossed into the First State in 2015 as visitors and tourists, an increase of about 500,000 from 2014 and 1.6 million more than in 2008. Visitors in 2015 generated $3.1 billion, a bump of more than $1 million from the year before. Tourism supports 42,000 jobs in Delaware, making it the state’s fourth-largest private employment sector. In 2008, there were 31,000 jobs attached to local tourism, and since 2014 about 1,170 new jobs were added to the sector. A total of $486 million in taxes and fees for state and local governments were generated though tourism in 2015. Learn more.
